A Georgia toddler is in critical condition after sustaining more than 150 yellowjacket stings. According to a family-run GoFundMe page, two-year-old Beckham Reed accidentally disrupted a nest while driving his electric toy vehicle in the backyard. His father, Peyton, sprang into action, rescuing him but also suffering stings. Beckham was rushed to the emergency room, where he received morphine and Benadryl.
Initially released from the hospital because his breathing seemed normal, Beckham’s condition quickly deteriorated. Within 24 hours, his skin began turning yellow, prompting a transfer to Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick. Doctors discovered that his heart, liver, and remaining kidney were plunging into failure. Born with just one kidney, Beckham’s little body was overwhelmed by the venom.
The family reported Beckham “was intubated and put on dialysis while receiving life-saving IV medications.” They explained, “Due to his age and size and the amount of stings he had, his little body was unable to handle the amount of toxins in his body.” Thankfully, they added, he “was responding to the support.”
As of June 27th, physicians considered removing Beckham from the ventilator.
“His vitals look really good today,” the family shared. Though a rough day preceded this hope, “we pray Beckham can extubate safely and that his mom and dad can hold him today!”
However, doctors recommended waiting another day. “The kidney doctor wants them to wait because she is afraid when he comes off sedation, he may pull the dialysis line. We are aiming for tomorrow. It is God’s timing, and we are learning to be patient.” They also plan to transfuse him with platelets due to low counts.
Beckham’s recovery is expected to be slow, especially regarding his kidney function. His father has been out of work to care for him, and his mother Mariah, pregnant with their second child due in August, stays by his side. The fundraiser has raised more than $31,000 toward a $40,000 goal.
