Giannis Antetokounmpo will remain on the Milwaukee Bucks for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a supermax extension.
Antetokounmpo’s agent, Alex Saratsis, told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski that the NBA star would sign a five-year extension worth $228 million. The contract includes an opt-out after the fourth season.
“This is my home, this is my city. I’m blessed to be able to be a part of the Milwaukee Bucks for the next 5 years. Let’s make these years count. The show goes on, let’s get it,” the two-time MVP tweeted on Tuesday.
If Antetokounmpo had not agreed to the contract extension, he would’ve been an unrestricted free agent following the 2020-2021 season. Now, The Bucks can enter the upcoming season without the pressure of contract discussions looming over their heads and focus on advancing through the playoffs and into the NBA Finals.
Milwaukee has finished their last two regular seasons with the best record in the league but failed to reach the NBA Finals. In 2019, the Bucks took a 2-0 lead over the Toronto Raptors in the conference finals before losing four straight games. This past season, the Bucks lost to the Miami Heat in five games during the semifinals in the Orlando bubble.
The Bucks have made a few moves so far this offseason, hoping to make it to the elusive Finals. They agreed to a trade that brought in Jrue Holiday and added D.J. Augustin, Brun Forbes, and Torrey Craig. They re-signed Pat Connaughton.
Antetokounmpo is fresh off a season where he saw his scoring average improve to 29.5 points per game. According to ESPN, this season, he became the first player since Wilt Chamberlain to average at least 29 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 assists throughout the season.
