Google is leaning further into AI with new features to enhance Gmail inboxes everywhere.
The company has announced a redesigned AI Inbox aimed at helping users stay on top of tasks, deadlines, and updates without digging through endless emails. Alongside the new inbox view, Google is also introducing AI-powered search overviews and a built-in proofreading tool, while expanding several existing AI features to all Gmail users.
The AI Inbox introduces a new tab that organizes information into two main areas: Suggested to-dos and Topics to catch up on. Suggested to-dos highlight emails that require action, such as upcoming bill payments, appointment reminders, or follow-ups tied to shipping or account verification. Topics to catch up on focus on informational updates, grouping them into categories like Finances or Purchases, so users can quickly see things like delivery confirmations, returns, or financial statements.
“This is us delivering on Gmail proactively having your back, showing you what you need to do and when you need to do it,” said Blake Barnes, VP, Product at Google, in a briefing with reporters. “Don’t worry, the traditional inbox will remain available. This is simply a new view you can toggle in and out of as you please to cut through the noise of your incoming mail.”
Gmail search is also getting AI Overviews, allowing users to ask natural language questions and receive summarized answers pulled directly from their emails. “We scour every email in your inbox, and we give you the answer to your questions right at the top,” Blake said.
Google is also rolling out Proofread, a Grammarly-like feature that suggests clearer wording, better structure, and cleaner sentences. While some tools are limited to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, features like Help Me Write, threaded email summaries, and Suggested Replies are now becoming available to everyone.
