Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is standing by his “Don’t Say Gay” bill and wants “woke gender ideology” to stay out of schools.
The controversial governor has been making his rounds ahead of the law going into effect on July 1st. Legally called “Parental Rights in Education,” the law has been nicknamed the “Don’t Say Gay” bill due to the strict limitations placed on sexual orientation and gender identity curriculum in certain classrooms. The bill will ban this type of instruction for kindergarten through third grade. It will also restrict teachings of this kind in older grades if the lessons aren’t deemed age-appropriate.
During his press conference in Madeira Beach, Florida, on Wednesday, DeSantis supported the bill and measures being taken to ensure it is enforced.
“Elementary school kids should not have woke gender ideology injected into the curriculum. That is inappropriate. That’s not what we want in our school system,” DeSantis said.
The Florida Board of Education will meet on June 29th to put in place means of carrying out the bill. The session will also discuss special magistrate protocols if parents decide to take legal action against school boards that violate the bill.
Many organizations and companies have slammed DeSantis for taking drastic measures to keep students from learning about gender and sexuality in schools. Disney is among one of the biggest corporations to take aim at DeSantis. On Sunday, LGBTQ groups in NYC protested DeSantis’s visit to the Jewish Leadership Conference at Chelsea Piers.
