The Biden administration is calling for parents of children who were separated at the U.S.-Mexico border to be evaluated for psychological trauma.
During Trump’s administration, millions of children were separated from their parents and imprisoned in detainment camps. Now, President Joe Biden wants to know how the Trump-era policy has mentally traumatized parents.
This all comes as the government is being sued by migrants whose children were taken from them; children are expected to be evaluated as well, ABC News reports. The two requests were filed by 11 families, and there are almost more than a dozen of cases that are still waiting to be reviewed in connection to the detainments.
“President Biden called the Trump family separations criminal and a moral stain on the nation, but now his administration is hiring doctors to try and claim the families didn’t suffer all that much,” said Lee Gelernt, deputy director of the ACLU Immigrants’ Rights Project and a lawyer for plaintiffs in the effort to compensate migrants, ABC News reports.
The migrants say their “mental and emotional injuries are ongoing and permanent in nature” and that their injuries are directly related to the government’s policy. They say it is necessary for the government to have its own opportunity to examine them.”
