The family of Drakeo The Ruler is outraged after the slain rapper was excluded from the Grammy’s memorial tribute.
The ceremony’s annual Memoriam honors musicians and entertainers who have recently passed away. This year’s tribute included Young Dolph, DMX, Slim 400, and Virgil Abloh. Unfortunately, Drakeo was not included in this year’s list. His brother, Ralfy the Plug, slammed the Academy for excluding the California star, who was fatally stabbed to death on December 19th backstage at the Once Upon A Time In L.A. Festival.
Ralfy says his brother’s exclusion “comes off as a spit in the face.” The rapper says his brother stood up for artists who were wrongly discriminated against by law enforcement for their lyrics.
“Leaving Drakeo out of their tribute and by not giving him any acknowledgment of his existence sums up exactly what we feel the industry has been trying to do. Erase us,” Ralfy stated.
The outrage surrounding Drakeo’s Memoriam snub is not the only backlash that the Grammys received this year. The internet has dragged the award ceremony for labeling Virgil Abloh as a “hip-hop designer,” despite him being the artistic director at Louis Vuitton and founding the wildly popular Off-White brand.
The Grammys have not responded to the outrage.
