Travis Scott could potentially face criminal charges stemming from the Astroworld festival that left ten dead and thousands injured.
On Thursday, a Texas grand jury will meet to determine whether or not the “Sicko Mode” rapper and several other Astroworld organizers will be charged for the concert that left attendees crushed to death when a massive surge took place in the crowd. Evidence will be presented to grand jurors, who will determine whether or not there is enough probable cause to support criminal indictments.
The plaintiffs claim that despite knowing the potential hazards, Scott, LiveNation, and two dozen other defendants purposefully allowed too many people into the stadium in order to pack the festival at NRG Park Houston. There were 50,000 people in attendance on the day of the tragedy. About 4,900 fans were injured, setting off a chain of lawsuits against organizers and the producer. Shortly after the concert, Scott spoke out in an interview with Charlamagne Tha God, calling for the concert industry to make provisions to keep attendees safe. He also maintained that he had no idea about people being hurt until after his set.
Many have placed the blame directly on Scott, who commonly calls for his fans to “rage” during shows. During the November 2021 Astroworld show, he reportedly urged fans to rush toward the stage, inadvertently causing many to be crushed. Others have cited LiveNation for putting everyone at risk by overselling tickets to the event.
It’s unknown if the grand juror will make a decision during Thursday’s proceedings. Charges are also not guaranteed, though the civil lawsuits are still pending.
