A shooting following a funeral has claimed the life of one attendee and injured multiple others in a shocking cycle of violence.
The deadly incident occurred on Tuesday outside of Stewart Funeral Home in northeast Washington, about three miles from the U.S. Capitol. Shortly after a funeral service concluded at noon, a gunman opened fire on a crowd outside the building. One adult male was killed, while three other victims sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities have not released a motive but have confirmed that the attack was not random.
Ironically, authorities have also revealed that the funeral service was for another shooting victim. Multiple outlets have confirmed that Stephon Carroll was the deceased being honored at the service. The 24-year-old was gunned down in southeast Washington on March 24th. No suspects have been named in that case.
“It’s unfortunate that someone would be so brazen to do such an act, let alone at a funeral,” D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee said during a press conference.
It does not appear that any of the victims exchanged gunfire with the assailant. It’s also unclear if all of those struck were the intended target or only one person in the crowd. Police are now urging anyone with information to come forward. They have revealed that they are looking for a green vehicle seen fleeing the area moments after the shots rang out. Several bullet holes riddled the building. Thankfully, no one inside appears to have been hit.
About 30 minutes after the funeral home shooting, police responded to reports of gunfire a short distance away. Though, police do not believe the incidents are connected.
