Gymnast Gabby Douglas has been forced to postpone her long-awaited return to gymnastics after testing positive for COVID-19.
Fans looking forward to seeing the thrice-decorated Olympic champion during this weekend’s 2024 Winter Cup were left disappointed on Friday when she announced her diagnosis. The 28-year-old took to Instagram to update her supporters that she will not be able to perform.
“Hey folks! It’s with a heavy heart that I have to share this news—I won’t be rocking the competition floor this weekend. I was stoked to be back, but alas, I’ve tested positive for COVID,” she wrote.

This comeback was poised to be her first dance on the competition stage since the 2016 Summer Olympics. She decided at that time to step away from the beloved sport to focus on her mental health after receiving immense backlash, some of which surrounded her looks. However, after a few years to herself, Douglas announced last July that she was preparing to return for the 2024 Winter Cup, which takes place in Louisville, Kentucky. She has used her Instagram over the past few months to post videos of her working out and preparing for her return. Sadly, that will have to wait.
As of now, it is unknown if Douglas is experiencing any symptoms. However, in her Friday announcement, she thanked supporters and assured them that she will refocus on gymnastics after this latest hurdle.
“I’m gutted, but fear not, I’ll be back in action soon! Sending my best to everyone in the competition,” Douglas added.
