After weeks of silence and a nationwide search, Hannah Kobayashi has finally broken her silence following her return to the U.S.
“I was unaware of everything that was happening in the media while I was away, and I am still processing it all,” Kobayashi said in a statement released by her aunt, Larie Pidgeon.
The 30-year-old went missing last month after reportedly walking into Mexico in what police have called a “voluntary disappearance.”
Kobayashi re-entered the U.S. on December 15th. “My focus now is on my healing, my peace and my creativity,” her statement continued. “I kindly ask for respect for myself, my family, and my loved ones as I navigate through this challenging time.”
Lt. Doug Oldfield of the LAPD confirmed to PEOPLE that Kobayashi presented herself at the border and “appeared to be in good health” with no signs of distress.
With her case officially closed, Kobayashi ended her statement by thanking those who supported her: “I am deeply grateful to my family and everyone who has shown me kindness and compassion during this time.”
