A 29-year-old Harlem mother of one was fatally shot outside her apartment building after she and her fiance confronted a man who groped her in the street.

New York Daily News reports that Shadina Smith left her apartment on W. 150th near Frederick Douglas Boulevard around 12:30 p.m. on January 16. When she got outside, a man grabbed her inappropriately on the street. Smith went back to her apartment to inform her fiance, identified by The Daily Mail as Josh Hall, 26, about what had just transpired outside.

Smith and Hall went back out to confront the man, and the two were shot outside their apartment complex. Hall was struck in the left arm and chest, while Smith was hit three times in the chest. The pair were rushed to Harlem Hospital, where Smith was pronounced dead. Hall has since been discharged from the hospital.

The gunman remains at large.

Smith’s aunt, Corine Booker, remembers Smith as a loving mother to her son, Uriel Hall, with whom she said Smith was “obsessed.”

“She was very invested in her son and his future,” Booker said. “I hate that he won’t be able to know how wonderful and how resilient she was.”
