Former Las Vegas Raiders player Henry Ruggs III will have years behind bars to think about his actions that cost a woman her life in a fatal drunk-driving crash.Â
On Wednesday, the once promising football star was sentenced to three to ten years in prison for the fiery November 2nd, 2021 wreck. Ruggs was speeding up to 156 miles per hour in his Corvette when he collided with the rear of a Toyota RAV4 driven by 23-year-old Tina Tintor. The impact sent both vehicles spinning out of control, with Tintor’s car catching on fire, killing her and her golden retriever. Police concluded that Ruggs had a blood alcohol level of 0.161, which is over twice the legal limit in Nevada. His girlfriend, Kiara Je’nai Kilgo-Washington, was in the luxury sports car with him at the time and suffered a broken arm.Â

Judge Jennifer Schwartz handed down the sentence, allowing Ruggs to speak before he was led away. In one of his few statements surrounding the case, the now 24-year-old expressed his immense remorse for his actions that night.Â
“To the parents and family of Ms. Tintor, I sincerely apologize for the pain and suffering my actions the morning of November 2nd, 2021, have caused you, your family, and those who knew Ms. Tina and Max,” he said before adding, “I let my family, my teammates, and those who believed in me down with my actions and hurt so many.”
Ruggs accepted a plea deal in May 2023, which would guarantee him at least three years in prison but no more than ten. This agreement is favorable compared to the 50 years he was originally facing. As part of his deal, he pleaded guilty to one felony count of DUI resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter, TMZ reports.Â
Additionally, Ruggs says he is committed to raising awareness about the dangers of drunk driving.Â
