“I Am Legend” Sequel Starring Will Smith And Michael B. Jordan Will Feature An Alternate Ending

Producer and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman revealed the ‘I Am Legend’ sequel will have an alternate ending.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Goldsman shared insight on what fans can expect from the upcoming film. ‘I Am Legend’ premiered in 2007 and ended with actor Will Smith dying to protect two survivors from nocturnal mutants that were plagued by a virus.

Goldsman says the film “will start a few decades later than the first” and will take inspiration from the popular HBO series “Last Of Us.”

“I’m obsessed with ‘The Last Of Us’ where we see the world just post-apocalypse but also after a 20-, 30-year lapse,” Goldsman said. “You see how the earth reclaims the world, and there’s something beautiful in the question of, as man steps away from being the primary tenant, what happens? That will be especially visual in New York. I don’t know if they’ll climb up to the Empire State building, but the possibilities are endless.”

In addition, Goldsman added that the sequel would follow Richard Matheson’s 1954 novel for its alternate ending.

“We trace back to the original Matheson book, and the alternate ending as opposed to the released ending in the original film,” Goldsman said.

He continued, “What Matheson was talking about was that man’s time on the planet as the dominant species had come to an end. That’s a really interesting thing we’re going to get to explore. There will be a little more fidelity to the original text.”

‘I Am Legend 2’ will follow Smith’s character, Robert Neville, accepting that he’s become a monster to the infected humans. After making the mutants apart of his experiments, the scientist decides to leave his research behind and decides to go on a hunt for a survivor’s colony in Vermont.
