An Illinois police officer who fatally shot a black teen earlier this week during a traffic stop has been fired.
According to NBC Chicago, the unidentified police officer was fired for “multiple policy and procedure violations” in the death of Marcellis Stinnette in Waukegan, Illinois.
Stinnette was a passenger in a vehicle with his girlfriend Tafara Williams, 20, when the police officer opened fire on the couple. The unidentified Hispanic officer claims that he feared for his life as the couple’s car began moving in reverse as he was approaching the vehicle. According to the police, no gun was found in the car.
Williams was hospitalized after having multiple surgeries due to gunshot wounds in the abdomen and arm, her mother reported.
The FBI and the state police are currently investigating the fatal shooting.
