An Indiana man has been charged with murder after allegedly killing his wife on Valentine’s Day, reportedly because he was upset over her reaction to his romantic efforts.
Taylor Meyer, 34, was arrested on Friday and charged with the murder of 36-year-old Deborah Meyer. Authorities say he stabbed her 40 times with a kitchen knife before sending a photo of her body to a man he suspected she was having an affair with.
According to a probable cause affidavit, Jeffersonville police responded to the couple’s home late on Feb. 14 after receiving a call from someone who said Deborah Meyer was in danger. The caller told police he had received a phone call from her number and heard her yelling for help in the background. While officers were at the scene, the same caller received a photo message from Deborah’s phone showing her lifeless body on the floor.
Police forced their way inside and found Meyer in an “aggressive” state, requiring officers to physically restrain him. Inside the home, officers also found three young children, all under the age of five. Deborah Meyer was discovered with multiple stab wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
During an interview with detectives, Meyer allegedly admitted to the killing, claiming their marriage had been strained since he saw a photo of his wife holding hands with a co-worker in January. He told police he had planned an elaborate Valentine’s Day celebration in an effort to save their relationship, including a “Bringing Paris to You” theme, decorations drawn by their children, and a special dinner.
“It was the hardest I’ve ever tried,” Meyer reportedly told police. “She just didn’t give a s—.”
Meyer said his wife left the house after dinner and returned about 20 minutes later. When she went into the bathroom, he attempted to look through her messages on her smartwatch. When she came out, he demanded her phone, which led to an argument.
According to the affidavit, Meyer claimed that Deborah punched him in the face, and he retaliated by grabbing her and wrestling her to the ground. He admitted to choking her and hitting her in the head with a wine bottle before grabbing what he described as a “big ass kitchen knife” and stabbing her repeatedly.
As she lay dying, Meyer allegedly called her suspected lover and told him, “It’s your f—ing fault. You want to ruin my marriage and tear my family apart.” He then sent the man a photo of his wife’s body with the caption, “Your fault,” according to police.
A medical examiner determined Deborah Meyer suffered approximately 40 stab wounds.
Meyer was taken into custody and is being held without bond at the Clark County Detention Center. He has pleaded not guilty and is scheduled to appear in court on March 18.
