The notoriously private Janet Jackson is ready to tell her story.
Jackson dropped the first full trailer for her upcoming documentary, JANET, on her Instagram Saturday. The documentary will air over two nights later this month, commemorating the 40th anniversary of her debut album.Â
After remaining private for long, why would she want to share so much of herself now? When asked why she decided to make the documentary in the teaser, Jackson responds, “It’s just something that needs to be done.”
The four-hour doc will give an up-close and personal look at Jackson’s career and life through never-before-seen footage. Footage from her childhood includes her father, Joe, and her late brother, Michael.
The documentary will address the controversy surrounding Michael and its effect on her career. “There’s a great deal of scrutiny that comes with having that last name,” she says. “Guilty by association. I guess that’s what they call it, right?”
She will also address the 2004 Super Bow Halftime show incident with Justin Timberlake. “They build you up, and then once you get there, they’re so quick to tear you down,” Jackson says later in the trailer. A clip plays showing a newspaper headline reading, “Jackson Banned From GRAMMYs after Super Bowl Stunt.”Â
The series will also offer commentary from her peers, like Missy Elliott, Paula Abdul, Samuel L. Jackson, and Janelle Monae.Â
The documentary is set to air on Lifetime and A&E on January 28 at 8 p.m.
