JD Vance is showing love to Nicki Minaj after comments she made at AmericaFest sparked a fresh round of online debate about race, beauty, and who gets centered in cultural conversations.
The Ohio senator reposted Minaj’s remarks and made it clear he agreed with her framing. In his words, she “said it best,” pointing to her message that uplifting Black girls does not require tearing anyone else down. Vance specifically highlighted her line about beauty, where she explained that wanting little Black girls to feel beautiful does not mean putting down little girls with blonde hair and blue eyes.
Those comments came from Minaj’s appearance at the conservative-leaning AmericaFest conference, where she spoke broadly about confidence, self-worth, and rejecting narratives that force people into constant competition with one another. While Minaj did not name political parties or figures in her remarks, her words were quickly picked up across social media and interpreted through a political lens.

Vance leaned into that interpretation. Along with praising Minaj, he added his own commentary, arguing that society has been pushed into what he described as a zero-sum mindset. He wrote that people have been “wrapped up over the last few years in zero-sum thinking” and blamed “the people who think they rule the world” for pitting groups against one another. According to Vance, Minaj rejects that framework, and he said, “We all should.”
The moment landed loudly online, especially given Minaj’s history of resisting easy labels and speaking on issues from her own perspective, even when it makes people uncomfortable. Some applauded the message as common sense. Others questioned the political embrace. Either way, Nicki managed to set off another conversation without backing down, and that is very on brand.
