Jennifer King is making history as the NFL’s first full-time Black female assistant coach. The Washington Football Team, formally the Redskins, made the announcement on Tuesday.
King served a full-year as a coaching intern before being named as the assistant running backs coach. While interning, she worked with the offensive staff throughout the offseason, training camp, and regular season.
“It’s another step forward for women in football,” King said in an interview with CBS News. “It’s a good moment for me, but it’s a good moment for a lot of people aspiring to be in this situation as well.”
King also shared a message for young women looking to one day become coaches in the league.
“Just keep going,” she said. “If it’s something that you want to do, continue to gain knowledge and experience. Take any experience you can get and just keep going and keep growing in the game.”
King joins the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ Lori Locust and Maral Javadifar as the only current full-time female coaches in the NFL. Additionally, King and Callie Brownson made headlines for working as coaches in a game refereed by Sarah Thomas last year. Brownson serves as Cleveland Browns Kevin Stefanski’s chief of staff.
