Former President Joe Biden isn’t surprised that racism and sexism stood in the way of Kamala Harris winning the election.

“I wasn’t surprised, not because I didn’t think the vice president wasn’t the most qualified person to be president. She is,” Biden said Thursday on “The View.” He added, “They went the sexist route…this is a woman, she’s this, she’s that,” calling it “a successful and consistent campaign undercutting the notion that a woman couldn’t lead the country and a woman of mixed race.”
Asked why Trump remains fixated on him, Biden replied, “I beat him.” He insisted Harris could have won had more voters turned out: “A lot of people didn’t show up.” Biden emphasized he would’ve prevailed if he ran again, citing Trump’s “7 million fewer votes” in 2020.
Still, Trump flipped key states like Pennsylvania, Georgia, and Arizona, securing all seven swing-state electoral votes and the popular vote, the first for a Republican since 2004.
Asked about Harris saying she wouldn’t have changed Biden’s approach in office, he clarified, “I did not advise her to say that… she wouldn’t have changed the successes we had.”
Biden acknowledged regular talks with Harris and hinted she’s weighing her next steps.
“She’s got a difficult decision to make,” he added.
He concluded with disappointment over the outcome: “Liberal democracies all across the world lost last time,” blaming COVID’s lingering impact on voters’ attitudes and optimism.
“I think she’s first rate,” he said, adding, “But we have a lot of really good candidates as well.”
