Vice President Kamala Harris concluded Black History Month with a celebration honoring HBCUs.

On Thursday, February 29th, Harris held the second annual Black History Month reception alongside Second Gentleman Doug Emhoff at their residence. Dozens of guests were in attendance who all shared one thing in common: their love for HBCUs. Students and alumni from Howard University, where Harris graduated, attended the event. During her speech, Harris praised HBCU students and trailblazers and highlighted these institutions’ pivotal role in shaping the nation’s future.

The reception featured an array of delights, with a menu expertly crafted by renowned chef and Howard alumna Carla Hall. Attendees were treated to captivating performances by the Bowie State University Band and DJ B-Hen, an alumnus of Morehouse College, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of the evening.

Distinguished guests from various sectors, including academia, government, politics, non-profit organizations, small businesses, and entertainment, gathered to commemorate the occasion. Among them were HBCU students, alums, leaders, and notable figures such as Hampton University alumna Dr. Dietra Trent, Executive Director of the White House Initiatives on HBCUs, and Spelman College alumna actress Keshia Knight Pulliam. Video from the beautiful event shows attendees chanting, “I love my HBCU.”

In bringing together a diverse array of voices and experiences, Vice President Harris’ reception served as a poignant tribute to the legacy of HBCUs and the indelible mark they continue to make on American society. Hopefully, this tradition will continue even after Harris leaves the White House.
