The NFL has slapped Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes with a $14,069 fine for what it deemed a “violent gesture” during his fourth-quarter touchdown pass to tight end Noah Gray in last Sunday’s loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The gesture, which involved Mahomes pointing with both hands, was interpreted by the league as mimicking the use of guns. Although the celebration appeared relatively routine, the NFL seems intent on making an example of its star player.

Mahomes wasn’t the only player in that game to face a penalty. Kansas City defensive tackle Chris Jones also racked up an $11,255 fee for unnecessary roughness. Buffalo Bills defensive end A.J. Epenesa was fined $15,400, also for unnecessary roughness early in the fourth quarter of Buffalo’s 30-21 victory.

While this fine won’t significantly impact Mahomes financially, or any of his fellow players for that matter, it raises questions about whether the NFL will continue to penalize players for similar celebrations in the future. Though not necessarily a “violent gesture” or improper handling of other players on the field, San Francisco 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa faced a similar fine in early November for interrupting a post-game interview while wearing a MAGA hat.
