Gospel star Kirk Franklin opened up about his estranged son Kerrion Franklin and the status of their relationship today.
The “Stomp” singer joined The Breakfast Club Thursday and was met with a question from DJ Envy about how he and his son were able to heal from their tumultuous moments, many of which have played out publicly. Franklin alluded to his son having mental issues that his family has struggled to address for years.
“My son is a very talented, beautiful soul, and the way that he was wired is not necessarily his fault,” he explained. “A lot of times in our community, it is hard for us to acknowledge certain wiring. We want to think, ‘it’s something else.’” The Grammy-award-winner admitted that oftentimes the Black community does not acknowledge mental issues due to the distrust in medicine.
Kerrion was recently released from jail after being arrested on April 10th for allegedly driving a vehicle belonging to a missing woman who is believed to be dead. Police also found a gun inside the car. The 33-year-old maintains that the gun was not his and that he does not know the woman, though circumstances surrounding the case remain sketchy. Since leaving jail, Franklin says the two are trying to address and move on from their rocky past.
Months ago, the “Bad Boys: Los Angeles” cast member leaked audio of his father threatening to physically harm him after a dispute of some kind. Franklin later apologized to his fans for his outburst and said he lost his temper while speaking with his son. Following his release from jail, Kerrion thanked his parents in an Instagram post, seemingly having a change of heart given their volatile history.
