Free doughnuts are being distributed by Krispy Kreme in response to an ongoing blood shortage.
People who donate blood to the American Red Cross will receive a dozen original glazed doughnuts from the restaurant this week.
The promotion comes after the organization recently stated that it is experiencing its most significant blood shortage in over a decade, with a 10% drop in donations since the pandemic began in March 2020.
Customers must order in person at a Krispy Kreme location and present their donation sticker or proof of contribution via the Red Cross blood donor app to receive the free donuts. Other blood donation groups will also be eligible for the free dozen doughnuts.
The Red Cross website will list locations where people can donate blood.
Many factors have contributed to the shortage, such as canceled blood drives caused by illness, staffing shortages, flu season, and weather-related closures.
According to the Red Cross, a surge in Covid-19 cases could have contributed to the ongoing shortage.
Last year, Krispy Kreme tried to promote Covid-19 vaccinations by giving free doughnuts.
In March 2021, the company introduced a daily doughnut giveaway to urge people to get vaccinated. Since then, the company has distributed over 2.5 million doughnuts.
