Kysre Gondrezick has inked a new deal with the Chicago Sky to train with the team.
On Thursday, the Chicago Sky announced the signing of the guard to a training camp contract. A WNBA training camp contract is a short-term agreement allowing a player to participate in a team’s training camp to prepare for the upcoming WNBA season. These contracts are typically non-guaranteed and serve as a trial period. Still, Gondrezick has a good chance of securing a permanent spot, given her history with the team. Gondrezick participated in the Sky’s training camp in 2022.
Beginning her collegiate career at West Virginia University, Gondrezick became the fourth overall pick in the 2021 WNBA Draft by Indiana Fever. This achievement made Gondrezick the highest WVU women’s player selected in the draft history. She recorded 36 points across 19 games in her rookie season, maintaining an average of 1.9 points per game. However, she took a break from the season to address mental health issues and was subsequently released by the Fever in January 2022, WBOY reports.
The following year, Gondrezick went through more personal turmoil during a domestic violence incident with ex-boyfriend Kevin Porter Jr. He was accused of striking Gondrezick multiple times and strangling her, as well as leaving a laceration above her eye. Gondrezick has since stated that prosecutors overexaggerated her injuries. Now, it seems that Gondrezick wants to pour herself back into her basketball career.
She shared her big news on Instagram with the caption, “His glory is truly a blessing from the Sky! @chicagosky.”
