Lauryn Hill has officially spoken out after fans and critics raised questions about the delay during her set at the 2025 Essence Music Festival. Taking to Instagram, the legendary singer and Fugees frontwoman set the record straight, thanking Essence organizers for acknowledging that the hold-up wasn’t her fault.
Hill reminded everyone that she’s not just a performer who shows up and sings — she’s hands-on in every aspect of her shows. From rehearsals to musical arrangements to set design, she takes pride in making sure everything she puts on stage reflects her purpose and passion.
“For those wondering why I’m still standing after years of being publicly dragged — it’s because someone has to do it,” she wrote, calling out the media and entertainment industry for their often unfair portrayals. She also challenged the narrative that she’s unbothered or disengaged, saying, “There’s this idea that I’m out on the Riviera with a drink in hand, showing up whenever I feel like it. That’s nonsense.”
Hill revealed that this wasn’t the first time technical or production issues caused show delays, but it was the first time a promoter publicly admitted their role in it. She made it clear that moving forward, she won’t let anyone pin the blame on her when it’s not deserved.
For those who felt let down, she extended understanding but stood firm. “If you can’t extend me grace, that’s fine. God’s grace is enough,” she said, adding that her dedication to her fans and message remains unshaken.
In closing, Hill thanked those who stuck around and rocked with her despite the late start. She also issued a warning to the media: “There are consequences for misrepresenting the facts.”
