Cruising in a custom Lamborghini, the two icons went on a high-speed journey through Kim’s career, legacy, and the man who helped steer her vision, Biggie Smalls. One of the most revealing moments of the drive came when Nick asked Kim if, looking back at some of her lyrics, she is proud of them or if she stands by what she said, noting that she inspired many women to be liberated. Lil’ Kim responded that she “loves having done that” and feels like she “took one for the team,” stepping out despite knowing she’d face backlash.
However, she shared a surprising story about her debut album, “Hard Core,” revealing that she actually second-guessed the explicit direction at one point. She told Nick that after finishing the album, she went to Biggie and suggested they add “one or two” cleaner, family-friendly songs for the kids.
Lil Kim revealed that she told Biggie, “Maybe we should do something more for the kids, at least one song,” but Biggie rejected the idea, saying, “It was hardcore and that’s what they were doing.” While Kim suggested it might be better to have something more universal, Biggie insisted this specific sound “would change everything,” and he knew it would. Nick agreed that “Biggie was right,” noting that the raw energy of that project is exactly why her legacy remains untouched.
Ironically, the songs Biggie protected ended up becoming global staples anyway. Nick pointed out that even so, songs like “Lady Marmalade” and “Ladies Night” ended up in big movies, and “kids know them to this day.” Lil’ Kim laughed about a surreal moment performing at an amusement park in Oregon, surrounded by kids, questioning if they meant to book her and comparing the experience to a “kids’ party.” Nick then asked, as a mom now, if she looks back differently at her lyrics. Lil’ Kim admitted she “used to be scared about that,” but her daughter is smart and is currently more into pop music.
It seems the Queen Bee has found a balance between her career and her life as a mom, proving that you can be a pioneer of liberation and a protective parent at the same time.
