Lil Mama took to social media on Monday to express her strong opinions about Nicki Minaj winning Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards.
In her comment under an Instagram post shared by Dee-1, Lil Mama criticized Minaj’s sexualized persona, calling her a “musical prostitute.”
Dee-1 had shared a video montage of Sexyy Red, GloRilla, Latto, Ice Spice, and Megan Thee Stallion performing at the BET Awards on Sunday, with his song playing in the background. In the song, Dee-1 raps about the over-sexualization of female rappers. He also captioned the post, “We can do better as a ‘culture’ @bet + @betawards i mean this sincerely…”
Lil Mama then took to the comment section, taking aim at Nicki Minaj, who she insinuated influenced these artists.
“Then gave Nicki an award for leading this pack. Corporate ‘BARS’ be going over our head. They laughing at us for sure!” she wrote. While responding to another user, Lil Mama added, “key word… THIS Pack. These young women are not influenced by Kim. Nicki is influenced by Kim. These women are 23. What major musical prostitutes do you remember from the last 15 years? Who do you think they watched corporate give a platform and flowers for sitting out? Be for real.”
She argued that Minaj’s persona has led to a flood of similarly sexualized female rappers in the industry, saying, “They are laughing at us, and the award was a ‘thanks to you, now we have 7, 8, 9 of ’em.'”
A Barb then insinuated that Lil Mama was jealous because she wasn’t invited to the awards, however, Lil Mama fired back.
“Are you saying that I would have been performing by selling p**sy too or just performing?”
Lil Mama’s comments have sparked a lot of debate online, with fans divided over her strong words about Nicki Minaj and her impact on hip-hop.
What do you think about the overly sexualized female rappers in the industry today?
