Lil Nas X talks facing homophobic backlash after coming out.
It’s not an easy journey coming out to the world, and in a new interview with BBC, Lil Nas X explained the fear he felt before making the decision to tell the world about his sexuality. The 20-year-old said that while he has received positive responses following his announcement when it comes to the negative feedback, the rapper chooses to go high when others go low.
“[While] learning the internet over the past couple of years, I used to be that person being negative,” the Atlanta native said frankly. “So it’s like I’m not angry or anything, I understand how they just want that reaction. I’m just going to [continue to] joke back [with you].”
He also said he never thought about coming out at all. “I mean it’s just something that I was considering just like never like doing, like ever—taking to the grave,” he said about his decision to come out. “But it was like, I don’t wanna just live my entire life—especially, you know, how I just got to where I’m at—not just like doing what I wanna do, so…”
Blocking out the negativity, Lil Nas says his move is one he hopes will help other members of the LGBTQ community “feel more comfortable.”
