Although Birdman and Lil Wayne have settled their longstanding beef, the legal issues between the father-son duo still remain. In fact, Wayne recently responded to a countersuit filed by Birdman’s Cash Money Records over royalty checks for Drake’s music.
Back in 2017, Wayne’s music company, Aspire Music Group, filed a lawsuit against Cash Money and Universal Music, accusing them of withholding royalties owed to them from Drake’s music. In the docs, Aspire argued that they discovered Drake and had a deal in place to secure one-third share of the net profits from the rapper’s first six albums, including a share the copyrights.
According to the music company, the rest of the profits were set to be split between Wayne’s Young Money and Cash Money. However, Birdman counter-sued Aspire, accusing his protégé of working with a lawyer to secure a large portion of Drake’s profits.
“There was no business purpose to forming Aspire, other than to siphon profits out of the joint venture and to divert those profits to [Ronald] Sweeney [the lawyer], [Cortez] Bryant, and Carter/ Young Money. Aspire never conducted any business other than getting Drake signed to a record label. Aspire has never signed, nor sought to sign, a single additional artist,” the countersuit read, requesting the lawsuit be dismissed.
But now, Wayne is denying Birdman’s claim that he orchestrated a plan to take a bigger profit, and his company is accusing the Cash Money boss of filing his suit after settling with Young Money and Lil Wayne on related claims.
According to Aspire, Cash Money is trying to “concoct a new fantasy narrative that casts Cash Money as the long-suffering victim of a scheme orchestrated by the very parties that it just settled with – Young Money and its owner principal Dwayne Carter.” In addition to that, Aspire says Cash Money’s claims against the company were never mentioned until Birdman settled a lawsuit with Lil Wayne earlier this year, despite the alleged incident taking place several years prior.
So now, Aspire wants the countersuit to be tossed.
