Los Angeles Metro is honoring the late rapper Nipsey Hussle as part of the city’s ongoing recognition of his impact on the community.
Hussle, who would have celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday, August 15, continues to inspire fans and organizations across Los Angeles.
To mark the occasion, the Hyde Park Metro station at Crenshaw and Slauson will be temporarily renamed the Nipsey Hussle station from August 15 through August 31.
In addition, Metro is releasing two limited edition TAP cards featuring the rapper. One card highlights an iconic photograph by Jonathan Mannion of Nipsey at the Hyde Park intersection, while the other shows him seated in the back of a Metro bus.
A total of 12,000 TAP cards will be distributed at select stations, including Hyde Park, Crenshaw, Slauson, Compton, Hollywood/Vine, and Expo/Crenshaw, as well as Metro Customer Centers.
New participants in Metro’s LIFE Program in South Los Angeles will also receive one of the special cards.

According to a press release, the initiative is part of the Metro x Culture campaign, which “aims to connect the agency with the heart of Los Angeles’ vibrant cultural landscape by collaborating with prolific local artists, musicians, community heroes and influential brands.”
The tribute highlights Hussle’s enduring influence not only in music but also in his community activism. Beyond Metro’s initiative, the rapper’s legacy is celebrated in multiple ways, including tributes from the hip-hop community, other artistic circles, and organizations inspired by his work in South Los Angeles.
By temporarily renaming a major station and issuing commemorative TAP cards, Los Angeles Metro is creating a lasting reminder of Nipsey Hussle’s contributions to both the city and its cultural landscape.
