After reportedly shooting 30-year-old Daquan Basnight in the early hours of August 1, accused killer Matthew Tanner shared a photo of himself on Facebook.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the photo helped cops in identifying him as the killer.
On August 2, Tanner, also known as “John Wick (Skippa),” was shown on Facebook dressed in black pants, a black T-shirt, and white “reflective” shoes with a black tongue.
Tanner was wearing the same outfit when he shot Basnight the day before, according to homicide detective Shawn Bruton’s affidavit.
Detectives requested that the Facebook page be kept private while they sought a data warrant.
Tanner, 36, is currently in jail and is being charged with murder and weapons offenses.
In court records summarizing the evidence obtained against Tanner, who was caught just days after the brutal West Ward murder, detectives offered no explanation for the homicide.
According to the affidavit, Basnight was discovered flat on his back with multiple gunshot wounds to his face and body. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and later pronounced dead.
Officers reportedly uncovered more than a dozen 9 mm round casings branded “extreme” while combing the scene.
Bruton said that Tanner was dressed in recognizable clothing and was identified as the killer thanks to high-quality surveillance footage from a nearby business.
The affidavit claims that video from New Home Liquors cut out at the time of the shooting but returned 20 seconds later, just in time to catch the gunman fleeing into a nearby alleyway.
Tanner was seen traveling from a home on Hoffman Avenue, near his last known address, toward the 800 block of Stuyvesant Avenue.
Police say they saw the same man emerge from the alley dressed in all black with white sneakers and a black tongue when the shooting broke out.
Bruton wrote, “The shooter is clearly seen wearing a black T-shirt, black pants and white reflective shoes with a black tongue.”
Tanner kept shooting at Basnight even after he was lying on the ground. According to the affidavit, he stood over Basnight’s body for two minutes before “calmly” departing the area as cops arrived.
The shooter reportedly had a light-colored “strip of fabric” tucked between his slacks and shirt, which detectives noticed. There was no one else in that type of gear in the shooting area.
Cops utilized “open source intelligence tools” to identify Tanner’s Facebook profile, which was under the name “John Wick (Skippa),” after the high-quality video system revealed him with “clarity,” allowing for “clear identification.”
