The recent BET+’s Martin reunion special premiere has reignited debates among fans as to whether or not a remake should be explored. Martin Lawrence, the show’s star and co-creator, claims that it is unlikely that the same “lightning in a bottle” will ever strike again.
Jimmy Fallon asked Lawrence about the reunion special on Monday’s Tonight Show.
“It felt great, man, just to see ’em again and get back together,” Lawrence said, as seen in the video up top. “It felt like we were going back to work. The only thing that was missing was our brother Tommy Ford, but we got to honor him in the right way.”
In the original series, Ford played Martin’s friend Tommy Strawn. Ford passed away in 2016.
Also, during his appearance on Monday’s Tonight Show, Lawrence was asked directly by Fallon whether he would “ever do the show again.” Fallon also credited Martin’s character Dragonfly Jones for writing one of his favorite scenes on the show.
According to reports, Lawrence is willing to collaborate with his co-stars in the future. Still, he isn’t sure if a total return to the iconic series’s original setting would be as successful as some viewers might believe.
“I think, well, you know, the Martin show was like catching lightning in a bottle, and I don’t think we can redo that again,” he said. “I wouldn’t mind working with the cast on something, but I don’t think we can do that again.”
However, he suggested he wanted to see a movie focused on his Sheneneh character.
