A Maryland mother is facing serious charges after being accused of shooting her 13-year-old daughter in the neck during a heated altercation at their Seat Pleasant home. The unsettling incident occurred just before 5 p.m. on Monday in the 500 block of 69th Place.
Officers responding to the scene found the young girl suffering from a gunshot wound to her neck. Despite her injuries, she managed to explain to the officers that she had just returned home from school when she was shot. According to court documents, the girl later revealed at the hospital that she and her mother, 32-year-old Talecka Brown, had gotten into an argument that turned physical. After the confrontation, the girl says she began to walk down the stairs, when she suddenly heard a gunshot and fell to the bottom, unable to move.
The charging documents indicate that Brown allegedly tried to cover up the incident by instructing her daughter to tell authorities that she had been shot by an intruder who broke into the home. Brown initially told police that the girl had been shot by a person experiencing homelessness and that her daughter was already bleeding when she arrived home from school.
The investigation quickly took a turn when officers noticed the smell of a recently discharged firearm inside the home. When questioned about a gun, Brown admitted there was an unregistered firearm in a safe. During her police interview, Brown provided conflicting statements about what happened. Eventually, she confessed to being the only person home with her daughter at the time of the shooting.
Brown was arrested and charged with first-degree attempted murder, among other charges. She is currently in custody, awaiting a bond review hearing scheduled for Wednesday.
The 13-year-old girl remains in critical but stable condition at a local hospital. Authorities have not released her name, and she continues to receive medical care and support.
Prince George’s County police are continuing their investigation, seeking to understand the full circumstances surrounding the shooting. As the legal proceedings move forward, the community hopes for justice and healing for the young victim.
