Master P stopped by The Gauds Show podcast, where he spoke about what it was like working with Meek Mill at the beginning of his career.
During the conversation, Master P revealed that as Meek’s manager, he advised him not to sign with anyone. Instead, the Philly rapper went against what his manager told him and signed a deal with Rick Ross’ Maybach Music Group.
“I was Meek Mill’s manager. Me and James when he first started,” P explained. “So, let me tell you why I stopped. I knew that Meek was talented at the beginning. We had that song. I was like, ‘Meek, you don’t need to sign with nobody.’ Meek was like, ‘I’m gonna sing with Ross.’ I had looked at the contract, and Ross a good dude. But he ain’t have his business straight at that time.”
He continued: “Ross got his shit together now. He a boss. But I’m saying, at that time, you evolving, I seen it, I told you I got the crystal ball, but he ain’t want to listen. I told James, ‘Well, it’s cool, you gon’ handle that.’ I ain’t never got mad at Meek; I just walked away from the deal ’cause if you don’t see what I see; I been there already.”
Host Ray Daniels said that if things had gone badly, Meek would’ve turned around and immediately blamed him. Maser P agreed and said that Meek had to find out for himself instead of taking his advice.
“But look what God did, he had to go find out on his own, and now he’s in a better position,” Master P noted. “But I’m tellin’ you, I knew he was a boss from jump.”
Meek has been open about his struggles with record labels. In October, Meek accused an unnamed label of not paying up while making money from his music in a now-deleted tweet.
“I haven’t get paid from music and I don’t know how much money labels make off me!!!!!” he wrote. “I need lawyers asap!!!”
He then threatened to expose the record label by publicizing his deal. Just months later, Meek took to Twitter again, explicitly calling out Atlantic Records over the handling of his Expensive Pain album.
