Matthew Knowles has a theory about why Beyoncé has yet to secure Album of the Year at the Grammys, and it involves her record label.
Knowles joined “TMZ Live” on Monday to share his thoughts, claiming that Columbia Records may be sabotaging Bey’s chances at the award. As Knowles explained, Columbia seemingly gets behind their white artists before Bey. He pointed to the 2017 Grammys when Beyoncé and Adele were both nominated for AOTY, with Adele taking home the trophy. Both are signed to Columbia, as well as Harry Styles, who beat out Beyoncé for AOTY last year when “Renaissance” was nominated.
Since Jay-Z called out the Recording Academy for failing to recognize any of Bey’s albums for the top award, there has been much debate surrounding why a Black woman has not earned the award since Lauryn Hill won the title for “The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill” in 1999. Bey is an especially interesting case, considering that she holds the most Grammys of any other artist, yet none of her albums have been recognized in the AOTY category.
While Bey never comments on these matters, the men in her life have no problem doing so, even at shows outside the Grammys. If you recall, Kanye West even went to bat for Bey at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards for losing in the Best Female Video category to Taylor Swift. Coincidentally, Swift holds four Grammys for AOTY.
