MC Lyte reflects on her divorce from John Wyche and how ‘distraught’ the experience was for her initially.
The rap veteran was the recent guest host on the daytime talk show, ‘The Real.’ While discussing the emotional process of going through a divorce, MC Lyte admits that she’s still going through the process. Lyte filed for divorce from her ex John Wyche in 2020 after three years of marriage for irreconcilable differences.
“I’m still going through it. When the press got a hold of it, I think people thought we were [divorced]. I had just filed, and so we’re still going through it right now,” Lyte tells the rest of the hosts.
She continues, “I think in the very beginning, I was very distraught. I feel like there are phases whenever a relationship ends, whether you’re married or not. It’s that first phase of, Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for us. Then it’s like, Oh my God, I’ve got to make this work for everybody else involved.”
Lyte and Wyche met on the dating app, Match.com and got engaged in May 2017. Three months later, the couple got married with a beautiful ceremony in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Lyte says she worked at trying to make their relationship last but eventually realized the two just weren’t meant to be.
“It’s hard in the beginning,” Lyte adds. “But you realize to have happiness doesn’t mean you have to remain together, and it doesn’t mean that you are a failure because the marriage failed. It’s all ego. You just have to be able to let go.”
