Ahmaud Arbery Killers Get Life In Prison For Federal Hate Crimes, Neighbor Gets 35 Years

Ahmaud Arbery Killers - WSBTV

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for the three men convicted of killing Ahmaud Arbery.

Gregory McMichael, his son Travis McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan are scheduled to be sentenced on January 7.

Trial Judge Timothy Walmsley will preside over the sentencing hearing next month at the Glynn County Courthouse, the same court where they stood trial. The jury returned a guilty verdict in November following eight days of testimony.

The men face life in prison, and the judge will decide if there is a possibility of parole. Even if they are granted parole, 30 years must be served before becoming eligible. The men face additional time based on their aggravated assault and false imprisonment charges.

On February 23, 2020, the McMichael’s armed themselves and chased 25-year-old Arbery as he jogged through a Georgia neighborhood. Bryan recorded the pursuit on his cellphone, including when Travis McMichael shot Arbery.

All three men are currently being held in the Glynn County Detention Center while awaiting trial on federal hate crime charges associated with Arbery’s murder. The federal charges were handed down by a grand jury in April. Jury selection for that trial is set to begin early next year. The McMichaels and Bryan have pleaded not guilty.
