Professional soccer player Alan Pulido is thankful to be alive after experiencing his own terrifying version of a Liam Neeson movie this past weekend.
The 25-year-old, who previously played for the Mexican national football team in the 2014 World Cup and who currently plays for Greece’s Olympiacos F.C., was kidnapped in his hometown of Ciudad Victoria in Mexico. As Pulido and his girlfriend were leaving a party on Saturday night, they found themselves surrounded by a group of cars. Several masked men came out and abducted Pulido at gunpoint, taking him away in their vehicles. His girlfriend was unharmed and alerted his family and authorities about what had happened.
As soon as the authorities found out that Pulido had been kidnapped, the army, federal police, and state police started a manhunt in search of him. His family received a call the next day from the abductors, who are believed to be affiliated with gangs in the area, asking for ransom money. Authorities did not specify how much they asked for in exchange for Pulido.
Meanwhile, Pulido, who was being held captive, was looking for any opportunity to escape. The next day, he was left alone for a brief moment with one of his abductors and Pulido saw that it was his chance to get away. He attacked the man and the two of them fought, but Pulido eventually won and stole the man’s cell phone and gun away from him. Pulido then called the police and told them where he was and what he was wearing so that they could identify him when they got there.
Minutes later, the police arrived on the scene and rescued Pulido, who luckily only sustained minor injuries during his ordeal. He has been checked out by doctors and psychologists, and he appears to be doing as well as one can be doing given the situation.
“Thank you very much for your prayers,” Pulido tweeted on Monday. “You’ve helped us a lot during this terrible experience that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. I really appreciate the support provided by the federal and state authorities that allowed me to return healthy and safe to my family and friends. Thanks to my divine God that is always with us and who has given me a new opportunity at life. Thank you all forever.”
