Michael Kors wants you to give your old MK goods a new home through their new resale marketplace.
The brand has opened its first online secondhand store where customers can list old Michael Kors handbags, crossbody bags, and wallets. Imagine eBay but only with Michael Kors merchandise and without the bidding. That is what Michael Kors Pre-Loved wants to bring to diehard MK fans on a budget. The company already has an outlet option on Michaelkors.com. However, this new platform is the first time they are selling slightly used items directly from consumers.
Michael Kors Pre-Loved works by allowing members of their Kors VIP rewards program to create a seller account with the marketplace. From there, they can upload photos of their goods for sale as well as a description. What makes the program so lucrative is that buyers can set their Pre-Loved prices as long as they are lower than the MSRP price. When the item sells, Michael Kors provides a prepaid shipping label for the item to be shipped within three days.
Sellers are not paid in revenue. Instead, they receive Michael Kors gift cards to be used on future MK purchases. Eighty percent of the selling price will be available on the gift card, while the other 20 percent from the sale will be used to cover operational costs.
Though the marketplace launched last Friday, many classic styles have already found their way to the site. The Sady Large Logo Top-Zip Tote Bag is listed as brand new with the tags still attached with a Pre-Loved price of $310 despite an MSRP price of $428. One of the brand’s most high-end bags, the MICHAEL KORS COLLECTION Monogramme Medium Python Embossed Leather Bucket Bag, is listed on the marketplace for a deal of just $825, despite the original $1,390 price tag. The seller of this rare bag also has it listed as never worn with all authentic labels.
Waste has long been a point of contention in the fashion world. Many brands have come under fire for the way they have disposed of outdated goods in the past. Michael Kors hopes its new platform will inspire customers to list merchandise they no longer use instead of throwing them out.
