BET’s new series “American Soul,” based on the life and career of “Soul Train” creator Don Cornelius has officially secured its star-studded cast lineup.
According to Deadline, Destiny’s Child’s Michelle Williams has signed on to play the legendary Diana Ross, who is courted by Cornelius to appear on the classic show. In addition to Williams, Bobby Brown has signed on to play Rufus Thomas, who is known for soul song, “Do the Funky Chicken.”
Alongside Williams and Brown, will be McKinley Freeman of “Hit The Floor” and Gabrielle Dennis of “The Bobby Brown Story,” who will play Ike and Tina Turner, respectively. The newly announced star-studded cast joins Sinqua Walls, who will play a young Don Cornelius, Kelly Price, Jason Dirden, Jelani Winston and more.
Produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment of “The New Edition Story” and “The Bobby Brown Story,” the series will tell the untold story of the rise of the legendary music and dance program. According to Deadline, the series will feature fictional and real-life character and moments and is set to premiere with back-to-back episodes on February 5.
