Mike Johnson Warns The Shutdown Could Be The Longest In U.S. History

Speaker Mike Johnson

It’s getting tense in Washington.
Speaker Mike Johnson is standing firm as the government shutdown stretches into another week, warning that this one could set records if Democrats don’t change course. During a press briefing at the Capitol, Johnson made it clear that he’s not planning to compromise anytime soon. He claimed that Democrats are holding up negotiations with demands tied to healthcare funding, and unless they step back, the shutdown will continue indefinitely.

“We’re barreling toward one of the longest shutdowns in American history,” Johnson said, describing the standoff as a “fight worth having.”

Federal employees are already feeling the impact, with paychecks on pause and vital services across the country frozen. National parks are closed, travel delays are mounting, and economic pressure is growing by the day. Johnson, however, says the fight is about principles. He argues that government spending needs tighter controls and insists Democrats are using the crisis to push “unrealistic” healthcare demands. The Louisiana Republican also thanked Donald Trump for stepping in to make sure military and Coast Guard members still get paid, calling it “the right move” in a tough situation. But for most government workers, the wait continues.
The last time the U.S. faced a historic shutdown was in 2018–2019, lasting 35 days. If Johnson’s prediction holds true, this one could surpass that, making it the longest government shutdown in American history. Political experts warn that the longer it lasts, the harder it will be for the economy to bounce back. Millions of Americans are now waiting to see who blinks first: Congress or the Speaker himself.
