Shalon Jackson, the son of Oscar-winning actress and comedian Mo’Nique, has issued a public apology to his mother and stepfather, Sidney Hicks, following a series of critical videos he posted last year that sparked widespread conversation about their family dynamics.
In a four-minute video uploaded to TikTok on Wednesday, Jackson addressed the previous fallout and admitted he was wrong for taking personal matters to social media.

“Making those videos a year ago was a betrayal against our family, and I have to take full accountability for it,” the 35-year-old said. “Why I made the videos and how I was feeling at the time is irrelevant. I made them, and I shouldn’t have. Period.”
Jackson acknowledged the toll his words took on his family and expressed regret for not handling things privately.
“My family did not deserve the backlash they received from what I said. My mother and Sidney were very justified to address my mental health condition at the time. I just didn’t like it. Taking accountability can be hard if I allow it to be. Bottom line, I was wrong, and I should have just called my mother.”
Jackson also described a difficult but healing family conversation, initiated by his brothers, that helped him reflect on his actions. While he said it felt like he was “spiritually jumped,” he shared that the experience ultimately brought him closer to his family.
“But at the end of the ass-whooping, my family did pick me up and give me a hug,” he said. “The love my mother has for her family and the way that she loves life is a testament to her husband.”
He expressed particular regret that the conflict affected Mo’Nique’s relationship with her grandchildren. Now, watching her play an active and loving role in their lives, he said he’s grateful for the chance to reconnect.
“Watching her make baby food for my son from scratch or bake cookies with my daughter, it makes me happy to have been so wrong before,” Jackson added.
The apology comes a year after a public dispute between Jackson and Mo’Nique, which began when he called her 2024 Club Shay Shay interview a “false narrative” and stated that they had no desire to reconcile. In response, Mo’Nique and Hicks shared an Instagram video addressing his claims, outlining the support they had given him, and later released personal text messages to provide further context.
Ending his video with a note of intention, Jackson said, “I owe it to my family to make this apology public due to the fact that I made our family business public. Though the road to family redemption is hard, I’m looking forward to it.”
While Mo’Nique hasn’t issued a direct statement in response to the apology, she did post a collage of family photos shortly after the video went live. The caption read, “GRATEFUL!!!! I LOVE US 4REAL!!!”
