A lighthearted comment from Muni Long about Lyfe Jennings’ classic song “Must Be Nice” turned into a heated exchange that ended with a public apology.
The back and forth unfolded on social media after Long teased that the track carried toxic energy.
It began when Long took to X and wrote, “Maturing is realizing Lyfe Jennings was really a hatin ass n*gga…. ‘must be nice…’ is crazy.”
Her words quickly gained attention, with many fans debating whether she was being serious or playful.
Jennings did not find the humor in the post. He took to Instagram to directly address her, questioning why she would label him in such a way.
“Sooo u leave me a message doubling down on ya post after u said it was a joke? Callin a grown man a hating ass ni@@a is wild work even as a joke. I’ve never been that maam. But what I have been, is humble enough to hold in high regard those that came before me and celebrate them as deserved. ‘Good news is you came a long way, bad news is you went the wrong way’ J Cole.. im bout to show u what writing is..” Jennings wrote.
A day later, Long tried to clarify her intention. She responded, “Ya’ll got Lyfe mad at me fr man I was just playing… I actually never listened to the whole song cause as a kid I didn’t like it.”
The singer later returned with a more direct acknowledgment of Jennings’ frustration. In a follow-up message, she offered an apology both privately and publicly.
“Hey man, if I hurt your feelings, that’s valid. I can take that and apologize. Definitely meant it as a joke and no disrespect. This is getting blown WAY out of proportion, which is what I said to you in my direct message. I can’t tell you how to feel at all, again, no disrespect. I apologize. I’m done with it now I’ve addressed you directly and publicly. Have a nice day!”
Although Long insisted she never intended harm, Jennings made it clear that the comment did not sit well with him.
What began as a casual joke on X quickly escalated into a reminder that certain words, even said playfully, can strike a nerve when directed at another artist.
