On March 20th, Netflix will premiere the four-part docuseries, ”Self Made Inspired By The Life of Madam C.J. Walker,” starring Octavia Spencer.
Spencer is set to star as Sarah Breedlove, known as Madam C.J. Walker, the iconic black hair care pioneer, and mogul who overcame racism and family turmoil to become America’s first black, self-made female millionaire. Walker was born in Louisiana in 1867 and was the first child in her family born into freedom following the Emancipation Proclamation.
The mini-series, based on the book, “On Her Own Ground: The Life and Times of Madam C. J. Walker” which was written by Walker’s great-great-granddaughter A’Lelia Bundles, also stars Tiffany Haddish as Walker’s daughter, Lelia, Blair Underwood as her husband C.J. Walker, Garrett Morris as Walker’s father-in-law, Carmen Ejogo as Walker’s business rival Addie Munroe, Kevin Carroll as her longtime lawyer Freeman Ransom and Bill Bellamy as Ransom’s cousin Sweetness.
Kasi Lemmons and DeMane Davis will serve as directors on the series, with Janine Sherman Barrois, Elle Johnson, Maverick Carter, LeBron James, Octavia Spencer, Mark Holder, Christine Holder, Kasi Lemmons, and Jamal Henders all executive producing.
