Octavia Spencer has apologized to Britney Spears for her prenup comments after the singer announced her engagement.
The Academy Award-winning actress issued the apology following her Instagram comment on Spears’ post moments after the “Gimme More” singer announced she was marrying Sam Asghari.
“Make him sign a prenup,” Spencer wrote under Spears photo. Though the comment appeared lighthearted, the 51-year-old “Ma” star still offered a sincere apology on Wednesday since her words were taken out of character by some.
“A few days ago Sam and Britney announced their engagement, and me being me, I made a joke. My intention was to make them laugh, not cause pain,” she wrote in a lengthy IG post.
Spencer also told her followers that she’d reached out to the couple privately before addressing her remarks publicly. She says the goal of her apology was to “restore just a smidge of happiness” that the couple may have been robbed of.
Asghari, a fitness guru and actor, made it clear in Spencer’s comment section that he was not offended in any way by the joke.
“You are very kind to clarify, but I have no hard feelings whatsoever. Jokes and misconceptions come with the territory,” Asghari wrote.
Spears has not commented on Spencers’ comments nor her apology. However, when she told fans on Twitter that she was taking a social media break to celebrate her engagement, many blamed Spencer for running the pop star away.
