OpenAI is making moves once again, securing a $38 billion contract with Amazon Web Services to scale its AI ambitions. The agreement, set over seven years, gives OpenAI access to powerful Nvidia GPUs hosted on AWS, enhancing its ability to develop next-level artificial intelligence tools.
This deal is part of OpenAI’s strategic pivot away from exclusive ties with Microsoft. Until early this year, the tech start-up had been heavily dependent on Microsoft’s cloud services. That relationship shifted recently, giving OpenAI more independence to pursue new collaborations, BBC explains.
“Scaling frontier AI requires massive, reliable compute,” said OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. “Our partnership with AWS strengthens the broad compute ecosystem that will power this next era and bring advanced AI to everyone.”
2025 has been a record-breaking year for OpenAI, with the company striking deals valued at over $1 trillion across the tech industry. Partnerships with Oracle, Broadcom, AMD, and Nvidia reflect a bigger picture: OpenAI is collecting computing power like it’s gold.
According to Kim Forrest of Bokeh Capital Partners, “The deal with AWS shows that OpenAI considers that its path to leadership is paved with getting access to as much computing power as it can get its hands on.”
After the announcement, Amazon’s market value jumped $140 billion, with AWS CEO Matt Garman stating that AWS is “uniquely positioned to support OpenAI’s vast AI workloads.”
