The Oprah Winfrey Network is creating a spin-off to its hit drama series Greenleaf.
We’ve kept up with the Greenleaf family for four seasons as the Memphis megachurch-owning family battled with lifelong secrets, scandalous lies, and financial issues that have created one of the best dramas on television. But, as the show comes to an end with its fifth and final season, the show which was created and executive produced by Craig Wright will be getting an extended storyline in an upcoming spin-off.
On Monday, the Twitter page for “Greenleaf” dropped a teaser for the show’s fifth season, as well as an announcement that there would be a second coming of the series. The video was captioned “Hallelujah #Greenleaf” with the praise hands emoji. According to a press release, Wright and Winfrey both decided the series would end with five seasons but that they would leave room for a possible spin-off. It was the support from fans that helped push the spin-off forward.

The new series will join OWN’s scripted programming, including Tarell McCraney’s David Makes Man, Ava DuVernay’s Queen Sugar, and Cherish the Day and Tyler Perry’s The Haves and the Have Nots. Greenleaf stars Merle Dandridge as Grace Greenleaf; Keith David as Bishop James Greenleaf; Lynn Whitfield as Lady Mae Greenleaf; Kim Hawthorne as Kerissa Greenleaf; Lamman Rucker as Jacob Greenleaf; and Deborah Joy Winans as Charity Greenleaf-Satterjee. The series won the 2020 NAACP Image Award for “Outstanding Drama Series,” Whitfield took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for the second year in a row.
In addition, the Greenleaf Soundtrack Volume Two won Outstanding Gospel/Christian Album (Traditional or Contemporary) in the 2018 NAACP Image Awards. “Greenleaf” is a product of OWN by Lionsgate in association with Harpo Films and Pine City. Winfrey, Wright, Clement Virgo, and Kriss Turner Towner all stand as executive producers. The new season will premiere Tuesday, June 23, at p.m. ET/PT.
