Earlier this week, a 51-year-old Pennsylvania man, Lee Kaplan, was arrested on charges of sexual assault. Police went to Kaplan’s house after receiving allegations of child abuse from neighbors and they found that he was living with 12 young girls, at least one which he had sexually abused. While that discovery in itself was startling, police soon uncovered even more disturbing details.
Apparently, one of the 12 girls living in Kaplan’s house was an 18-year-old girl whose parents had given her away to the sexual predator four years ago. Police say that Daniel and Savilla Stoltzfus gave away their teenage daughter when she was just 14 in order to settle a debt with Kaplan, who had saved them from “financial ruin”. In the four years that their daughter had been living with him, she gave birth to two children that were fathered by him. Her two young children, both girls, were among the 12 found living in Kaplan’s house as well.
Along with charges of statutory sexual assault, Kaplan is also facing a number of other felonies including aggravated indecent assault and corruption of minors. For their role in the crime, the Stoltzfuses were arrested as well on charges of criminal conspiracy and endangering the welfare of a child. They defended themselves to the police, claiming that they had researched and read on the internet that their exchange was legal.
Right now, it is unclear whether the other nine girls living at Kaplan’s house are also the Stoltzfus’ children or if they came from elsewhere. As of Friday, they have all been taken into Child Protective Services. Meanwhile, Kaplan and the Stoltzfuses are currently being held on $1 million bail.
