Pharrell didn’t waste a second getting to the point during a recent panel appearance. He opened by telling the crowd he hates politics, describing the entire system as a trick that pulls people into conflict. In his view, the moment someone chooses a political side, they’re unknowingly participating in division.

In footage captured by There Nicky Goes, the producer said the current climate has shifted so much that diversity, equity, and inclusion aren’t being prioritized the way they once were. With those conversations fading, he asked a bigger question: how do people keep moving forward when the support isn’t guaranteed?
Pharrell turned his attention to the Black attendees in the room and pushed them to reflect on what truly drives their ambitions. He asked whether they wanted opportunities because of their skin color or because they’re the best at what they do. For him, identity alone shouldn’t be the basis for success. Instead, he believes ambition, talent, and skill should be the foundation.
He stressed that he isn’t looking for favors or special treatment. His goal is to be so strong in his craft that people refuse to let him walk out of the room. Excellence, he said, is a strategy that never goes out of style, even if national focus on DEI does.
Pharrell wrapped his message by reminding the audience that trends may shift, policies may change, but being the best will always open doors. And for him, that’s where the focus belongs.
