Pop star Pink has always marched to the beat of her own drum, so it’s no surprise that in a recent interview, Pink revealed that she is raising her kids as gender neutral.

“We are a very label-less household,” said the pop singer.

⠀⠀
From the beginning of her career to now, Pink has made a conscious effort to challenge the status quo.

⠀⠀
In an interview with The Sunday People, she said it is her intention to raise her daughter Willow as gender neutral, permitting her to make free choices that are not contingent with society’s standards.

⠀⠀
“Last week Willow told me she is going to marry an African woman. I was like: ‘Great, can you teach me how to make African food?” Pink said.

⠀⠀
“And she’s like: ‘Sure mama, and we are going to live with you while our house is getting ready.'” She said the conversation ended with a joke, saying her only question to Willow was, “who is paying for this by the way?”

⠀⠀
This is not the first time that Pink has openly spoken about her views on gender roles and society’s standards. She recently praised a school that supported gender-neutral bathrooms, saying: “The bathroom outside the kindergarten said: ‘Gender Neutral – anybody’, and it was a drawing of many different shapes. I took a picture of it and I wrote: ‘Progress’. I thought that was awesome. I love that kids are having this conversation.”

⠀⠀
She also spoke about it at this year’s VMAs as she accepted the Video Vanguard award, and dedicated it to Willow. She talked about teaching her daughter the lesson of self-acceptance and being shocked when Willow called herself the ugliest girl she knew because she looked like “a boy with long hair”. In response, Pink opened up to her daughter about all the criticisms she experienced throughout her own career for “being too masculine”.

⠀⠀
“‘When people make fun of me . . . do you see me growing my hair? ‘No, mama.’ Do you see me changing my body? ‘No mama.’ Do you see me selling out arenas all over the world? ‘Yes, mama.'”

⠀⠀
“So, baby, girl,” she stated. “We don’t change. We take the gravel and the shell and we make a pearl.”
